To add to Caroline's comments about the 1851 census extract:

The entire extract is now available on CD Rom together with a mapping &
analysis programme. At £29.95 + VAT + postage, a touch expensive to buy on
the off chance that one of your families might be listed, but it would
probably be very useful if you wanted to do some general background research
on social trends such as distribution of occupations or population movement.
