Yes there is reference to it as far back as 13th Cent per Oxford English
Surnames Dict., but it would mean someone was probably from Dorset and that
they were, therefore living some where else! That won't narrow your
search down much - except to say probably not Dorset, but that isn't to say
he didn't return at a later date <G>.
As an aside a variation of STRICKLAND - i.e. STICKLAND is not common, but
it isn't rare in Dorset though.
