Back in May, Pam and I found that it was possible to "match" place names on
OS maps with info on LDS IGI printouts. This was really only successfull if
1:25 000 maps were used and if the IGI record refered to farms, large houses
etc. This is the same type of finding that Graham has reported.
For instance "John Brennand born 1742 of Broadhead" turned out to be John
Brennand who was born in a building called Broadhead which is (in this case)
clearly identified on OS Outdoor Leisure Map 41.
The building is now a ruin and is not marked on OS Landranger 103 which
covers the same area but at a scale of 1: 50 000. Since we only had the
Landranger map when we were there in 1997 we never found Broadhead at that
time.
This time we were standing in the ruins within 2 hours of buying the Outdoor
Leisure Map.
In sharing this info with another group I was told that there are OS 1: 25
000 maps for the whole of the British Isles. Outdoor Leisure maps are only
part of the series and have some limitations not found on the general OS
maps.
There are reprints of all kinds of old maps available. I purchased several
at the PRO for London for 1872. These particular maps are at a scale of 'a
yard to the mile." With this level of detail the ares shown really came to
life. (Why were there 14 pubs in the street my gg grandparents lived in, for
instance?) These maps are published by Alan Godfrey Maps of Newcastle upon
Tyne. I think they have a web site.
For people outside the UK there are companies that mail maps form the UK at
very reasonable prices. Regrettably I cant pass on any names and addresses
because my files were lost in a recent lightning strike.
Hope this all helps.
