To Eric Hillier,
James Crew bapt May 19, 1777 Sturminster Newton, Dorset, of Joseph & Susannah.
James Crew bapt Jan 20, 1780 Sturminster Newton, Dorset, of Joseph & Susannah.
George Crew bapt Aug 13, 1786 Okeford Fitzpaine, Dorset, of Joseph & Susannah.
This is the same family (and there were others), Okeford is walking distance from Stur.
George Crew settled at Bird Island Cove (now Elliston), Newfoundland as did another Dorset man, Robert Crew born 1798.
The oldtimers in Elliston refer to a tradition there that a Crewe went to the USA, but there is no body born there to fit the bill. Perhaps this is a vague reference to your James Crew of the south coast!
There was also a William Crewe on the south coast who was nearly forced into piracy by the Nova Scotia pirate- Jordan, about 1810.
In early Scilly Cove (Winterton) there was a Christopher Crew, who may have been the same bapt at Stur Jan 1, 1719, son of Thomas Crew & Elizabeth Fooet, and married at Okeford Feb 12, 1750 to Jane Hatcher.
Also:
James at Lamaline 1871.
William at Lamaline 1871.
William H at Fortune born about 1840.
Martin (of William?) at Rose Blanche born about 1820 married to Sarah Porter.
Martin bapt Aug 23, 1738 of William at Sturminster Newton.
I think they're all the same "kit and kaboodle" except John who was in "gaol " in St. John's - lets leave him there.
Tom
