Hello Diana
A death certificate will not give you a lot of information. I have one in
front of me for the year 1858. It gives:
The name of the registration district, sub district and county.
The date and place of death
The name and surname of the deceased
The gender of the deceased
The age of the deceased
The cause of death
The signature, description and residence of the informant
The date the death was registered
The signature of the registrar.

A few points to note

The most useful column in the one containing details of the informant.
Sometimes it will give the relationship of the informant to the deceased -
but not always. On the certifcate in front of me it says simply "Anna
Scammell" I'm guessing that was his wife, but he also had an unmarried
daughter of that name! Sometimes the informant is a Doctor, Priest ,
neighbour ect so don't automatically assume that the signatory is related.

The address column for both that of the deceased and the informant varies
from certifcate to certificate. Sometimes you get a full address which is
useful if you are trying to trace your family through the census - but as
often as not , just the name of the town or village is entered.

Death certifcate ages, like census ages are often guesses, so don't assume
they are exactly right.

What you really need is Scottish ancestry; Scottish certifcates are a mine
of useful information for the genealogist!
