Helen,
The Marnhull Book is a useful source, page 144, particularly for me. As my
ancestor Charles? a'COURT (b bef 1750) or his father has a mention;
"At Courts Mill, commonly called Factory Mill or Farm, about two hundred
years ago, (Abt 1750) man named A'court came from France, bought the
property and settled there, with his wife & eleven children" (Charles had
seven that I've found so far). "At his death the family, except one son
returned to France".
Well he may have said he came from France, this may explain why I cannot
find an earlier birth in the area, but Charles' family certainly did not
return to France. I have descendants listed on most of the seven.
If SKS has access to the wills or property details for Abt 1750-1800 I would
much appreciate any information. Especially anything on where Charles (&
Deborah, his wife) may have came from.
Enough of my needs, back to industries. A copy of the Marnhull Book is
available at the Dorset County Archives.
Page 144 (it's one of the two pages I photocopied) lists:
INDUSTRIES PAST & PRESENT
Brewing
Malting
Brick & Tile Making
Butter & Cheese Factory
Button Making
Candle Making
Cloth (wool) Making at Courts Mill or Factory Farm
Coopering
Farming
It also has extracts from the Churchwardens' Accounts on page 97, dated 1780
to 1880.
Regards
Roy a'Court
