There is just one bit that might be added to your notice
on Certificates & the GRO indexes. I have noticed quite a lot of people
searching unsuccessfully for early births in the indexes. They are mostly,
but not always, newcomers to the "occupation" who haven't yet discovered the
sad truth that registration of births wasn't compulsory until 1875; and that
a significant percentage of births between 1837 & 75 were not registered.
At that time it was only compulsory if the Registrar requested the
information.
