Dear Marjean
I probably can't help you very much in providing information about your
Samuel. My resource is the 1983 update of Thummel's 1965 compilation
"Descendants of John Finch of Connecticut" and the files of the former
Finch Family Association of which I am the Conservator.
The Samuel Finch who lived in Stillwater (Saratoga Cty) NY and was buried
in Ballston Spa was the son of Jeremiah and Abigail (Rundle) Finch of
Greenwich CT. Jeremiah was a brother of Samuel of Greenwich CT who
married Abigail Resco and among whose children was Samuel, born probably
around 1755. I have nothing further about this Samuel but he could have
been the one for whom you are searching.
Also in Saratoga during the time he (?) was there were distant cousins
Elnathan and Albert, both from Dutchess County, and whose parents were
from Greenwich CT. Elnathan, born 1760 in Fredericksburg, Dutchess
County, was a Baptist minister and resided in Clifton Park (Saratoga Cty)
NY. In my records, the name of his first wife is unknown (you say it was
Sarah) but his second wife was Elizabeth Champion, the daughter of
Baptist minister Jobe Champion.
Albert was born about 1755, probably the son of Benjamin and Sarah
(Knapp) Finch, who married ___Knickerbocker. You have her name as Lydia.
He was in Ballston Spa in the 1790 census, Cobleskill (Schoharie Cty)
NI\Y in 1800 and 1810 in Richmond, Ontario County.
The "History of Saratoga County" 1878 states that the Baptist Church in
Greenfield was formed in 1791 which would indicate an acquaintanceship
between your Samuel and Rev. Elnathan Finch. Incidentally, Elnathan was a
brother of Rev. Jonathan Finch of Providence (Saratoga Cty), my direct
ancestor.Your Lois married a Haggerty, one of the founding families of
Greenfield.
To account for the date of Samuel's will, he may have executed it before
he left Saratoga, thus the witness signatures of Albert and Elnathan
around that date.
That's the best I can do but I hope it helps.
