For those in the situation that Fran is in with only one phone line, there
is a solution. We installed a program called Call Wave. It acts like an
answering machine when you are on-line, greets the caller with a message of
your choosing, records their answer, and then automatically plays back the
message through the computer speakers once the caller has hung up. If the
person does not have caller ID blocked, you even see the number that they
called from. There is a free basic service and premium services start at a
price of $2.95 per month. This is still pretty much of a bargain compared
to what the phone company charges for voice messaging. There is a price
break if you pay a year in advance and there is a hardship allowance that
allows totally free usage for certain users with limited financial
resources.

It works like a charm and we really like it especially since we are on-line
a lot. It has been one of the best free/low cost services/programs we have
found on the internet. This way we don't miss calls. The only drawback is
that you can't use it with call waiting (which I abandoned anyway once my
kid left home). These folks have very helpful and responsive customer
service and there is a companion product called FaxWave that will give you a
fax number to give out to folks. Once a fax goes to that number, it is
forwarded to you e-mail inbox and you don't need to have a fax machine. You
can't use it for outgoing faxes, but for incoming ones it is nice
(especially for those people who are in time zones hours away from you who
fail to consider that when they send a fax; there is nothing that so warms
the cockles of your heart as being awakened at 2:30 a.m. by the infernal
whine of a regular fax machine receiving a fax from Switzerland).

The website is www.callwave.com
