I do a fair amount of video work with our cable tv station. In terms of
video transitions, a dissolve from one frame to another (pixels in one image
fade down while the other comes up) is usually considered minimal and
tasteful and keeps the user's attention focused on the content, not the
editing. It seems that a computer-based slide show might have something
like this, although I haven't explored this option in FTST yet.

I find that fancy checkerboards, spirals, and other attention getting
devices are best saved for special effects, titles, endings, announcements,
and humor pieces.
