Yes, but you don't have to put them in the same project in order to do
that. You can do that with people in different projects too.
Putting them in the same project allows to you see one alphabetical list
with everyone in it (sorted, filtered, and maybe accented as you
like). That will help you to identify the people that you might want to
see side-by-side.

I wrote the message below to Greg on TMG-L answering basically the same
question (before FTST-L existed). Following those steps, you can have two
Person View's (or two Family Views, Tree Views, or Project Explorers, etc.)
side-by-side to compare two people in the same project. It works just as
well with people in different projects, however.

Yes.

Access the File menu, choose Open, and select the same data set a second
time. Then you can put the two windows side-by-side and navigate them
independently.
When you reduce the size of the application window to half of your screen,
you'll need to tell FTST what to do with the independent windows inside it
(or they may not be visible). That is, you can
(1) move the Details, Children, Siblings, Project Explorer, Image, and
Flags windows around until you like the configuration
or
(2) maximize one of those windows (probably Details) so that it takes on
whatever shape that you give the application window.
Once you arrange the screen the way that you like, be sure to save it as a
"Layout" so that you don't have to do so again.
