There is a 500 page book published by Microsoft entitled "Official
Guidelines for User Interface Developers and Designers". Every software
designer should know its basic contents.

One does not have to guess about menu exit issue. Just go to the Appendix
and read that Exit should have it's 'x' underlined as its menus access
character.

No one is saying that we have to be dogmatic about this, but one of the
central ideas about a graphical user interface is that there should be
consistency between applications.

The same book shows several other areas where FST fails to comply with
accepted standards, such as placing user writeable data in the Program Files
directory. (especially important as home users start to switch to WinXP.)

Sure, C for Close, to which Microsoft seems to be moving (Access, IE). But,
with the exception of FTST, all the Windows applications I have which use
Exit (WP, Quicken, AOL, PKZip), have the underscored 'x'. It would seem to
be the convention for Exit.
