Well, it depends, the underlying DOS layer is about 50% of the stability issues
with
win 9x:) Switching between real mode and protected mode to do basic items is
part of the issue. Not to mention legacy interupts and other IBM PC legacy
issues.
That is part of the problem. Eventually all the legacy issues will be phased
out. Such as
vga support and old PC IDE support in the BIOS(even bios will be replaced) With
a flat
module protected mode from the very first time you start your computer.
But I imagine that the old 16 bit legacy startup will be with us for at least
another 5 years.
If you get me make and module, I may be able to find some xp drivers for you.
Not
necessarily manufactores versions. But stable versions by groups of people that
have
hardware that the vendor refuses to update to xp or 2k for that matter.
The worse vendors in that regard are HP. Acer, Iomega, creative in some areas.
Others are makeing the changes over time.
Oh, 64 bit systems desktop system start comeing out either 4th quarter this year
or
1st quarter 2004. Will have that BIOS replacement I was talking of. With it
will be new
boot drivers that are part of the card. so Plug and Play may actually be a
reality:)
The computing industry has evolved. DOS while not officially dead (still lives
in win 9x) should have
been killed off in 95, and the platform updated then. now in 2002 to 2007, we
will see the transistion
in the baseline platform, So finally on the PC platform we can have the
Multimedia performance shown in
the Macs and other flat memory platforms.
