Subject: Gonner's Luxembourgers in the New World, Feyen and Lucius Families
Date: Sat, 1 Jun 1996 12:19:08 +0000
In response to the women researching her Feyen relatives in
Luxembourg, I will post this for all who are doing genealogical research on
relatives in Luxembourg. I have been researching my ancestors there for
nearly three years (the family of Jean (John) Lucius born in 1845 in
Leudelange, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. I would be most appreciative of
anyone having any knowledge of this family contacting me
I have Gonner's Luxembourgers in the New World. By all means anyone
researching immigrants of this descent should get hold of this two volume
set. The first volume tells of the various periods of Luxembourger
migration between 1840 and 1890, where Luxembourgers settled in the U.S.,
and then much material on the socio-cultural life of Luxembourgers in the
U.S.
I have recently made a trip to the Iowa State Archives in Iowa
City, Iowa. While there I researched all relevant references to my families
both here and in Luxembourg in the Luxembourger Gazette. Volume II of the
above work by Gonner is an Index to the Luxembourger/American paper. This
volume is edited by Jean Ensch who is an archivist in Luxembourg City. He
has been most helpful in researching the documents at his disposal for me.
I have looked for your relatives in Volume II and I find a
reference to both Nikolas and Michel Feyen. In addition there are
references to Catharina, Charles, Cletus, Johann, Karl, Leonard, Louise,
Margaret and Robert Feyen.
If you need the full references ( Years, Months, Days and page
numbers for the Luxembourger Gazette ) I could e-mail those to you
privately. In doing research on the Microfilm of the Gazette at the Iowa
State Archives, I was able to get copies of my references without much
difficulty for 25 cents a sheet. The Archives will do research on your
ancestor for a small price. The only problem with the Gazette is that it is
in Old German print. To my knowledge neither Gonner's work nor the Gazette
are on the Internet in any form. The only other place the Gazette can be
accessed is at St. Donatus Parish, near Dubuque, Iowa. They have the
original copies of the Gazette.
I post this publically in the hopes that there are others out there
trying to find more resources and posts on Luxembourg. I hope this is
helpful.
