I have found a road block to my further family research because of a lack
of knowledge of the geography of the German and Austrian areas in the
ealry to mid 1800's. A copy of the 1870 census says my G-G-Grandfather was
born in STYRIA. As I understand it there was or is a state or province in
Austria by that name. Was this common or maybe a mis-statement of Austria?
He came to the US in around 1850 but I haven't been able to find any
infromationabout where from or where to.
My G-G-Grandmother is also a problem because the same census list her
birthplace as Baden. She was born in 1834 but I don't know which Baden.
There is a small town south of Vienna named Baden. Was it there in the
1830's?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
