Also, look to see the port the ship LEFT from. If it is amburg, you are in
luck, because the Hamburg debarkation records exist. You can get them on
film from the LDS. (Consult a good book on German genealogy for details on
the direct and indirect lists.) Figure back 3-4 weeks from the arrival
date to find the date they sailed from Germany. Then when you find them in
the Hamburg lists, it SHOULD give you the place of last residence in
Germany. THAT is where you look in Germany for other records: birth,
marriage, etc.
