My mother's maiden name was Duerkop. Another version of the name is
Duerkopf. It's old German (plattdeutsch, quite similar to Dutch and still
spoken in some parts of Germany, mostly in Lower Saxony). "Duer" may mean
"hard" or "dear", and "kop" may mean "head".
I have recently asked my aunt (nee Duerkop) to tell me more about the
origin and meaning of the name. If I learn more about it, I will let you
know. Be patient, though, she lives in Germany (Goslar) and it will take
a while before I get the information, if any.
