Subject: March of the Deerfield Captives, 1704
Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2001 01:46:49 GMT
For those of you interested in the Deerfield captives taken to New France in
1704, I have added a map showing the probable route of their march. It can
be found at my web page on Elizabeth Corse or Casse at
http://habitant.org/corse/casse.htm.
Please note that most of the route is that recorded by Rev. John Williams of
Deerfield. At the White River the war party split up into several smaller
hunting parties, so it is not clear how all the captives moved from the
junction of the White and Connecticut rivers to Lake Champlain. Some of the
parties took longer than others, but most of the captives made it to Canada
before Rev. Williams. Therefore, it is more likely that they took the more
direct route up Lake Camplain and did not stop to take a long time hunting.
Enjoy,
JP
