Hi,

I am searching for ancestors of the name Gailmard, or something similar
to it, from the region around Nice. I am fairly sure the name was
changed to Gailmard from the French original when an ancestor emigrated
to the US. The problem is, I'm not quite sure what the French original
is. I also have information that the emigrant was born and lived in
Nice, but this is not as certain.

I'd very much appreciate any info on (1) similar surnames that would
allow me to pick up the French roots of my ancestry, and (2) whether
Nice is indeed a good candidate for the home region of such a surname,
or whether names of this type didn't generally originate down there.
