I suggest you check the following work:

La Chenaye-Desbois et Badier, Frangois-Alexandre Aubert de.
_Dictionnaire de la noblesse, contenant les ginialogies,
l'histoire et la chronologie des familles nobles de France_.
3rd ed. 19 vols. Paris: Schlesinger, 1863-1876. Reprint ed.
10 vols. Paris: Berger-Levrault, 1980.

This work takes much of its information from other previously published
sources, but it is more comprehensive than other guides to the French
nobility. I know that the Allen County Public Library at Fort Wayne,
Indiana, has this work. You might also find it at major graduate
university libraries. Also, I recall seeing a few years ago a work on
the Scots peerage, in several volumes. Sorry, but I can not remember
the name of the author or the title. You might want to search for this
