Joshua Coffin 1845

Joshua Coffin, eminent historian and genealogist, in his History of Newbury
published the oldest known list of first ninety one settlers (1642) along
with a genealogical profile of these settlers and some of their
descendants.
Coffin's work is often referenced by Savage in his "Genealogical Dictionary
of the First Settlers of New England." Unlike Savage, Coffin was "on the
scene" and had access to local records as well as many of the descendants
of the first settlers to assist him in compiling his data.
Included in this facsimile reprint from the original work is a photo of the
monument, on the Newbury lower green, listing 70 of the settlers.
