OLD CAPE GIRARDEAU, 1946. Hardback, 60 pages, (5 1/2"x7 1/2"), Old
photographs and paintings, some protected by tissues. Published by Naeter
Brothers Pub. Co., Cape Girardeau Southeast Missouri. "Some short stories &
notes from historical articles in the newspaper, covering the time from the
last glacial period "7,000 years ago" to the formation of a district
government in Cape Girardeau in 1793...Answering such questions as:How far
back does our History go; How were our rivers formed; Who were the first
inhabitants; When did the First White Man come; Where did Civilization West
of the Mississippi begin, etc. etc." First inhabitants:When mounds were
constructed there was a population here as numberous as that which animated
the borders of the Nile, Euphrates, or Mexico...wrote Brackenridge, famous
historian, in 1817; Col. Thomas Beckwith, Pioneer Citizen of Mississippi Co.
MO, devoted many years to the study of mounds & found pottery balls with
finger prints in them. Biog. of Cape Girardeau's founder, Louis Lorimier, by
Louis Houck (photo). Lorimier was French-Canadian, born at Lachine, on the
island of Montreal, in 1748. He & his father were Indian traders & he married
an Indian princess, daughter of a Shawnee chief, giving him a standing with
various tribes, a great asset. His 1808 will names her as "the Shawnese
woman, Pemanpieh," with whom he has lived 24 years & upward, whom he loved &
considered his wife. She rests beside her husband, her tomb reads: To the
memory of Charlotte, P.B. Lorimier, 1808, age 50, leaving 4 sons, 2
daughters, & a long verse in French. Photos of A.H. Hinchey, R.S. Douglass
(Bethel Church), David Green, Thomas Bull (Baptist); John G. Putz ,
Methodist, McKendree Chapel; Burfordville Mill, and much more history &
names. New Madrid Earthquakes, from Dec. 16, 1811-Feb. 7, 1812, "the worst in
the written history of the world." Some foxing inside covers, and a bit
musty, but a good, clean, tight copy of this hard to find book. $15. + $2.50
