Subject: Medieval ancestry for James Fowke/Fowkes of Accomac County, Virginia?
Date: 1 Apr 2004 14:08:46 -0800

Gerard Fowke of Virginia is known to have been of gentle ancestry (see
various discussions posted to the newsgroup). An appendix in Horace
D. Hayden's _Virginia Genealogies_, p. 743-45, implies that James
Fowkes of Accomac County, Va., was a distant cousin of Gerard.

"33. JAMES FOWKES, Jr., Accomac Co., Va., came from Staffordshire,
rec'd 350 a. land for 7 head rights, recorded at Accomac, Nov. 18,
1676; m. Rachael. Had--42. James. 43. Thomas. 44. Daniel."
[Descendants traced in Virginia, Maryland, and New York.]

The following English ancestry is given for James of Accomac:

--William Fowke of Brewood, Staffordshire, m. Jane, dau. of Strechay
of Strechay.

--Roger Fowke of Brewood; bur. Brewood Ch. 1546; m. Margaret, dau. of
John Whorwood, Esq., of Compton.

--William Fowke, or Foulke, of Brewood, d. Feb. 18, 1558; m. Joan, d.
1572, dau. of James Leveson of Lilles Hall, wid. of Wm. Skeffington,
Esq.

--Roger Fowke of Brewood, who bought Wyrley Grove (p. 154) from John
Leveson. He m. Apr. 11, 1570, (I.) his cousin Joan Fowke of Gunston,
dau. of Rogert Fowke ... (Brewood Church Register.) She was bur. Oct.
18, 1590. [Married] (II.) Sybil Chelsham (or Chelsum), bur. June 15,
1600.

--James Fowke of Little Wyrley [son by second wife], b. Feb. 4, 1597
(Brewood Ch. Reg.); b. 1597 (Glazebrook's Visitation of Staffordshire,
1663, pp. 133-4). Father of James of Virginia.

Has anybody done any further work on the origin of James Fowke of
Virginia?
