>I am confused by one thing. Under Controversies you talk about the Menteith marriage to Suzanne Hotman. You state that in your opinion "filles" should be read as "filleules"... then you state that Yves Gagnon said the line is correct.
>
>Which line? That Jean de Monteth *is* the great-grandson of the Earl of Montrose? Or that his grandmother was the goddaughter and not daughter of that Earl? That part confused me as to what you're saying Yves is saying. :)

The opinion of Yves is this should be read as is, i.e. his
grand-mother was the daughter of Montrose. Anyway, I revised
the wording and it is now on my site.

>Ok on another note, it might be helpful to state in that note that the document is the marriage contract 18 Jul 1594 in Paris; Cathereau et Babynet (if I got that right) so people know where to look for the proof that Jean says this.

Added.

>By the way what Jean (John) de Menteith (or Monteth) says is that he is "seignor of Argentenay, born in Scotland in the province of Sterlingshire, of the house of the Earl of Monteith and the Baron of Carse ... assisted by John Gordon ... his second degree cousin because of their grandmothers, daughters of the Earl of Montrose in Scotland."
>
>This is as Yves posted it. So wouldn't you need to show that second-degree cousin AND daughter as both read wrong?

Actually, you have the reading of the contract, which is one thing,
and what should be read according to other facts we know, which is
something else.
