Subject: [DNA] List Guidelines (e.g. WINGFIELD project and Marfan syndrome)
Date: Thu, 1 Aug 2002 12:10:00 EDT

The recent posts about the WINGFIELD project are good examples of how to
handle the interface between traditional genealogical research and DNA test
results.

There is a fuzzy boundary, of course, but in general, this list is for the
technical DNA details. Brief discussions of the genealogical background are
very welcome -- as I've said before, DNA test results in isolation mean
nothing. But extended discussions of the genealogical aspects are best
handled on the appropriate surname list.

Abigail Young posted some details and mentioned she would copy her message to
the Wingfield list. Lee Preston seconds her invitation to join the Wingfield
list if you're interested in point-counterpoint discussions. These can be
very instructive case studies, even if you don't have Wingfield ancestry
yourself.

The Marfan thread was another good example of how to handle "extended
discussions." The GENEALOGY-DNA list is a good place to discuss mechanisms of
heredity and whether DNA testing would be helpful. Brief pointers to more
resource material about the specific syndrome are also welcome. "Extended
discussions" about the syndrome would best be handled on another mailing
list, perhaps one devoted to Marfan, and someone gave pointers on that. But
this also gives me the opportunity to publicize another mailing list,
MEDICAL-PEDIGREE, which was created to handle a broad range of topics
including hereditary conditions.

You can find mailing lists from the RootsWeb home page,

OK, folks -- I bet you were expecting a lecture, and instead you got praise! <
