Subject: [DNA] RICE OR ROYCE DNA
Date: Fri, 2 Aug 2002 22:30:22 -0700
A few days ago someone by the name of RICE posted a message that he had been informed by a lab testing his DNA that he was really a ROYCE.
I would like to know the proof behind this statement. Where did this information come from and who made the distinction between these two surnames and how?
I understand that there are some descendants of Edmund Rice who changed their surname to Royce because the name Rice was so common. Also some descendants of John Rice of Dedham MA moved to Ashford CT and changed their name to Royce. Also when I was checking my own "Royce" family in Connecticut I discovered that the Town Clerk of Wallingford CT recorded in the town records all people that we know as ROYCE but he has recorded them all as RICE.
It all depends on how the name sounded to the person recording the name. So far I have run across more persons named RICE who over the years changed their name to ROYCE than vice versa. .
I still don't know if my ROYCE ancestors were ROYCE or RICE.
