Subject: [DNA] Mutation Rates autosomal STR's

After I looked at the link Ann just posted, I wandered around a bit on
the site since I hadn't been there for a while. I found an interesting
chart of "Apparent Mutations Observed at the 13 CODIS STR Loci in the
Course of Paternity Testing." These are not on the Y chromosome but the
variation in the rates among the different markers is interesting and
what I thought was really interesting was a noticeable difference in
mutation rates between the same markers in maternal and paternal
meioses. For example, marker FGA (on chromosome 4) had an apparent
mutation rate of 0.01 in maternal meioses and 0.29 in paternal meioses.
The sample sizes are reasonably large having been compiled from results
from over 50 different paternity testing labs. Not surprisingly, there
were larger sample sizes for the paternal data though that should not
cause differences in mutation rates:)

That chart is at http://www.cstl.nist.gov/div831/strbase/mutation.htm

This certainly suggests a variety of mutation rates for the Y STR
markers. Wish we had some results from sample sizes of the same
magnitude!

Nancy
