Subject: [DNA] BGA Testing of 103 Year Old Melungeon Woman

I know that there is quite an interest out there in the Melungeon people of the Appalachian Mountains. Frankly it was not surprising when Beth Hirschman identified my Ozark born mother in law's very rare mtDNA (found so far only in Iraq - of all places - and adjacent areas) as typical of the Melungeon people. Mum's great grandmother Wright (from whom the mtDNA came) and great grandfather Collins were born in Tennessee and Georgia respectively. These are typical Melungeon surnames - as are others on my mother in law's maternal and paternal sides.

My mother in law's great grandparents were born in the opening years of the 1800s. Given that she appears to have a sizeable probable Melungeon contribution to her genetic heritage it would be interesting to know what racial - ethnic mix would emerge from the DNAPrint (BGA) testing from AncestrybyDNA. I should have the results in a few weeks.

I am hoping that the mtDNA and BGA testing will help shed a little more light on this very interesting group of people.
