Subject: [DNA] mtDNA in Laci Peterson case
Date: Tue, 4 Nov 2003 08:32:41 EST

Last spring, we discussed the use of DNA to identify the bodies of Laci
Peterson and the infant, which had washed ashore separately (search archives for
Laci). The case is now being tried, and mtDNA analysis is being used for a hair
found on Scott Peterson's boat.

Terry Melton of Mitotyping quotes a figure of $2500 for mtDNA analysis. I
corresponded with Melton several years ago, before mtDNA analysis became more of
a consumer item. She explained that the cost is higher for forensic analysis
because of the extreme care required for "chain of custody" issues. Only one
case is worked at a time, in a specially designed clean room. The mtDNA is also
sequenced 4 times: each strand in both the forward and backward directions.
