Subject: [DNA] Suggestion: Include "Master List" link of webpage links in the "You have subscribed notice"
Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2003 20:07:26 -0500

Ann and all:

When I originally subscribed to the list I got this email from the List
server. One would think this notice could easily be edited by the list
administrator to include a few excellent beginners help page links. I
humbly would volunteer my DNA Info page as one.

Others could be included too. Or the list administrator could create a
"master page" of various help page links such as mine, Mr. Duerincks and
many others and provide only the "master page" link to the list of DNA
Beginners help links in the "you have subscribed" email notice. I assume
the list administrator has the ability to edit this you have subscribed
to this list notice. If not, then that should be a suggestion to to allow the respective list administrators to include a
personal note with the "subscribe" welcome notice, and which siad
personal not can include a URL link to help pages relevant to the list.

Here is what I was sent when I subscribed to this list and here is where
some introduction to helpful beginners info links should be provided to
"newbies" to the list. Charles

You have added to the subscriber list of:

the following mail address:

By default, copies of your own submissions will be returned.

instructions on how to handle administrative tasks
such as changing your subscription status. These
are handled by an automated system, and sending
messages to all the subscribers will not work.

This mailing list is for anyone with DNA (i.e.
anyone!) who would like to discuss methods and
share results of DNA testing as applied to
genealogical research.

As a courtesy to all list members, please keep
these tips in mind:

1) Decide whether your reply should go to the
whole list or the individual poster -- and check
if your mailer is sending it where you intend! By
default, replies will go to the whole list,
although this is subject to change depending on

2) Keep your messages relevant to genealogy. DNA
testing has many other applications in medicine,
archaeology, and forensics, to name just a few
disciplines. However, there are other newsgroups
and mailing lists for these topics, and
subscribers may be encouraged to move extended
discussions off-list.

3) Likewise, extended discussions of a particular
surname should be moved off-list. One-time
announcements by people who would like to contact
others researching the same surname are
encouraged. However, the person who initiates the
topic should be willing to facilitate discussions
at more specific sites, such as surname mailing
lists at or surname forums at and

4) Make your subject line descriptive, and change
it if you change the topic. Many people only have
time to scan subject lines and will bypass your
message if the subject line doesn't grab them.

6) Limit quoting to a few lines -- just enough to
set the context for your reply.

7) There is no such thing as a dumb question, but
there could be such a thing as a question which
has been asked twenty times already! If you are
#21, you might not get an answer from the group,
but you can see what's already been covered by
searching the archives:

8) We are all cousins.

Here are the administrative details:

Welcome to the GENEALOGY-DNA mailing list! You are currently subscribed
in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made
to GENEALOGY-DNA as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change
to digest mode are given below.

1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to

that contains (in the body of the message) the command

and no additional text.

2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd
not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance,
if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you
want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to

3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and
sent to you together as a single large message). There are two
steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to
to discontinue mail mode. Second,
send the command "subscribe" to
to start receiving digests.

4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode.
All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe
when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them
to start again, simply subscribe again.

5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing
list receives it, just send it to . It
will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode.
You don't need to send it explicitly to both.

6. To contact the administrator of this mailing list, send mail to
