Kathy,

My brother tested with Family Tree DNA for the Clan MacKenzie DNA Project which began in October 2004 and now has 48 members. I am finding matches to a large number of other surnames. What I am doing is using the history of each clan and a Scottish Clan map to plot my matches according to date and location that the surnames might have crossed paths (using the calculator for adjusting for known generations.) My closest match so far, beyond 12 markers, is with a KYLE. The KYLEs were from southwestern Scotland and most went to northern Ireland, but some went to the area now known as Kyle of Lochalsh near Skye. I also have matches to MACDONALDS, and the Lochalsh area was originally held by the MACDONALDS and taken by the MACKENZIES OF KINTAIL - which was to the east. The MACREAS sided with the MACKENZIES and were installed as protectors. The CAMPBELLS and MACLEODS were also in the area and involved in all the intrigue. There was a whole lot of fightin' goin' on back then.

It is too early in the testing of Clan MacKenzie for me to determine that I am not really a MacKenzie, but of a line that took that name - but I have to keep an open mind as to what might have occurred back then. The MacKenzies were a dominant clan so it would not be unusual for my ancestor to assume that name. There could also be birth events that occurred that spread the surnames around. Or even marriage events - a MacKenzie female marrying a member of a less powerful clan and then the male assumed the MacKenzie name. Maybe all of the above :-)

My paper trail only goes back to 1780 Tennessee, so at this time I am unable to find a Scottish ancestor, but through the DNA matches, I can now read the histories of the clans and of the area and visualize where my ancestors might have been and what they might have been doing at a certain point in history. My McKenzies were in Tennessee so early and then in southern Illinois so early that it is becoming apparent to me - after reading more Scottish highland history - that they probably wanted to be as far from the English and civilization as possible. They obtained land in Illinois and I have read of only a few fights with local Indians. After what was going on in the Highlands, and the fights with Indians in early Tennessee, Illinois must have seemed like paradise - well, except for the New Madrid earthquake of 1812!

These are just some of the Clan matches that I have - mine is the one at the top of the list. I hope that more of these people upgrade beyond 12 markers.
