If you know these were your cousins from common ancestor, you know when the
individuals were all born so don't have to use an estimate, do you?

Yes, I do know when they were born, and that is why a test run on a well-documented line is valuable--it confirms the accuracy of the method for those situations in which we do NOT know when our ancestors were born.
