The Friends of the Volga Archives book restoration project was a great
success! Thank you to all generous 50 members who donated! * (See at the
end of the message for a complete list of donors.)

Not only have we provided substantial funds for both the Saratov &
Engels archives for restoration of many of our ancestral village book
but we have gone a long way towards establishing greater communication,
understanding and friendship with the directors of the archives, Mrs.
Elisabeth M. Erina (Yerina), director of the Engels Archives and Mr.
Alexei V. Voronetzev, director of the Saratov Archives. Both directors
now understand the value of email communication and are moving forward
on that front.

Specifically we donated equal amounts to both the archives, $1,200. As
you saw from the thank you the directors of both archives expressed to
Vera Beljakova-Miller, they were thrilled with the large amount. They
will be able to restore many books with those funds. In addition we
donated $300 to Saratov for a modem and internet connection. This is
the same as we have done previously for Engels. There was about $150 in
expenses: phone, fax, interpreter & bank fees.

Unfortunately the director of the Volgograd archives was on vacation.
Since he was the only person there authorized to sign any agreements,
and the Volgograd archives were such a far distance from Saratov where
Ken Stugart was staying, he returned with the Volgograd money, $400. We
will discuss with the people whose donation were targeted for that
archive, and decided what to do with the money. We could return it to
the donors, or give it to the Saratov / Engels archives at a future
date.

It is quite a lengthy process for the archives to provide a list of
books that they can restore with the funds provided. And it took them a
while to understand precisely what we were looking for. Saratov was able
to complete their list before Ken left and Engels is working on an exact
list although they did give us a summary list.

We will continue to work towards acquiring a complete list of Volga
German holdings in both the archives. Additionally we will work towards
setting up email communication with the archives and try to find a way
in which funds can be delivered to them safely and without too much
expense. Ultimately we would like to be able to order research from them
directly. These goals are similarly to what AHSGR is trying to
accomplish, with all Russian archives. There are no easy answers, and
there are obstacles to overcome, but what the Friends of the Volga
archives has just accomplished takes a giant step in that direction.

Please feel free to contact Vera, Ken or myself directly if you have
questions.

Comments about the following restoration book lists by Patrice Miller.

Below you will find a proposed list of books that the archives are
planning on restoring. Saratov's list is complete, more details will be
coming for the Engels list. What was surprising to me was the number of
books that were listed for a single village.

You will note the books that need restoration at Saratov do not include
the censuses. I suspect that the census books, for the most part have
been well maintained in the archives, and if they needed restoration, it
has already happened. All the books listed for restoration appear to be
some type of church book: births, marriage & deaths. These are probably
part of the 700 church books that have been returned to the archives
recently from the Russian government and perhaps were stored under less
than optimal conditions. Also the books in need of restoration in
Saratov are from later years, after the 1850s up to about 1919.

Engel's preliminary list has a differently character than Saratov's.
While I don't know specifically what type of books they are, there are
many in the 1700's, such as 1764 - 1779, 1794. Some in the early 1800s,
some around 1834. I suspect a few of these books are census records
since they fall around the date of the censuses. The books extend into
the 1900s with the last date being 1922.
