Thank you both Gene and Rosemary,

You both have valid answers, but they differ.

- I know that the Orthodox church for example,
likes to "test" an engagement couple, as to its basic
knowledge of the bible and the implications of marriage,
children, no divorce, duties of spouses, etc...

this is Gene jenkin's Catholic "Pre Cana classes"

- Rosemary Larson sends us more of a document,
whereby the 2 single persons declare that there are no
legal hinderances to their marriage.

But why should the GR archives in Russia have "separate"
books for such "exams" ?
they also have separate books for "Confirmation", which I
understand.

- Rosemary's pre-nuptial questionaire.
might be a separate List ?

Did you know that Peter the Great outlawed forced marriages ?
and banned women from being veiled in public ?

(but he did not ban arranged marriages,
as long as the daughter was in agreement).

But we know the law.
If a daughter rebelled, she might well be forced, or thrown out of
the house,

What are "reading the banns" ?

Is that the same as declaring that a marriage will take place,
and it is adverstised on the church board and in Germany, on
the village admin office, just in case bigamy is about to be
committed ?
--
someone once sent me a note about my Baltic grt-grandmother
getting married, and they found it strange and amazing that she
married the day after the "advertisement-announcement of the
forthcoming marriage.
