Fran,
Yes, his service record should have survived and be available in the Public
Record Office at Kew, London.
And yes, to be pedantic you would get a different document. What your the
sister, whom you mention (not sure from the way you have worded it who's
sister), has is the man's own copy of his record in sheet format, which he
personally retained and carried around with him. The centrally kept records
are in book format. So, technically and pedantically they are different. You
COULD obtain a copy of the centrally kept record. (Please see Iain Kerr's
reply re this.) BUT, essentially, it will contain the same information as
you already have. The only variations you would be likely to find would be
any comments / working notes added in the records office, and, possibly ,
the word "Run" if he deserted at any stage, and / or "D.D." with an
associated date. This means "Discharged Dead" and the date is the date of
death.
