Hi List,
I am looking for help as to where to look. My mother was adopted in the early 20s and the family have only just started to look into her natural family. Her father was William Samuel PENNEY, born 1859 (she arrived when he was 60). He ran the Perseverance Public House in Vassell Road North Brixton at the turn of the century. When he re-married in 1916 he is shown as the Manager of the ASC Canteen in Lyndhurst Road, Camberwell. I have looked at Lyndhurst Road and there was a Thomas Tilling bus depot there which I assume was commandeered for the duration. There are no other viable candidates in the road for an ASC canteen.
He therefore spent the WW1 doing chip butties for those moving soldiers around, an honourable way to do your bit for the War effort when you are over 55. Is there any chance that there would be records of his service anywhere.
