Subject: [WW1] New to List - Query re Records
Date: Mon, 6 Nov 2000 19:46:04 -0000

Hi Listers,
I have just joined the list and wonder if I can ask what are probably some
very basic questions. I know my grandfather served in WW1 in the Royal Army
Ordnance Corps and have a record of his service number. However I have
little else and would like to find out more. I have written to the MOD
archives people and they tell me that they may have records, but I will need
to pay £25 to find out.
Could anyone please advise on whether this is worth pursuing (i.e. what are
the odds of finding any useful records?) or whether instead I should pursue
other avenues first? I gather that there are some records at Kew but a) it
is not particularly convenient for me to visit and b) I had heard that their
records were mainly for officers (which my grandfather wasn't).
Also are there any resources on the web that I should take a look at?
Thanks in advance for any help that you can give to a "newbie".
Andy
