Hi Tina,

I had the same thing with my great grandfather. I was able to get his
discharge papers as well as medical records, marriage and death certificates,
letters written by him and on his behalf by contacting the Veteran's Affairs
office for my state. If your relative or any of his family ever claimed a
pension based on his service, the VA will have records of this type.
