"Tuborg" (?),
"Soldiers Died in the Great War" lists only two John KILMARTINs. Your
would seem to be:
32781 Private John Kilmartin, 9th (Service) Battalion, The York and
Lancaster Regiment; born and enlisted in Sunderland, Co Durham; Killed in
Action in France and Flanders on 11 Oct 1917.
During World War I, The York and Lancaster Regiment raised a total of 22
battalions from the pre-war establishment of two regular, one reserve and
four territorial battalions. The regiment won 59 battle honours and four
of its officers and men were awarded the Victoria Cross. The regiment lost
a total of 8,810 casualties during the Great War.
The 65th Regiment of Foot raised in 1756, from 1782 The 65th (2nd Yorkshire
North Riding) Regiment of Foot, and The 84th Regiment of Foot raised 1793,
later The 84th (York and Lancaster) Regiment; from 1881 The York and
Lancaster Regiment), disbanded in 1958.
The 9th (Service) Battalion, The York and Lancaster Regiment was formed at
Pontefract in Sep 1914 as part of the third of Kitchener's new armies. It
was assigned to 70th Brigade in 23rd Division at Frensham, Surrey. In Nov
it moved to Aldershot and Feb 1915 to Lyminge, Kent and then in May to
Bordon, Hampshire. On 27 Aug 1915 the battalion embarked for France and
Flanders, landing at Boulogne. The 70th Brigade was detached to 8th
Division between 18 Oct 1915 and 17 Jul 1916. In Nov 1917 the battalion,
in its formations, was sent to Italy. The 9th Battalion ended the war in
the same role and formations on 11 Nov 1918 in the Porcia area, west of
Pordenone, Italy.
