Ken,
During World War I, The King's (Liverpool) Regiment raised a total of 49
battalions that served in every theatre except Mesopotamia. These were
raised from a pre-war establishment of two regular, two reserve and six
territorial battalions, including the Liverpool Scottish and Liverpool
Irish battalions. The regiment was awarded 58 battle honours and seven of
its officers and men were awarded Victoria Crosses. The King's Regiment
lost 14,200 casualties during the Great War.
The 13th (Service) Battalion, The King's (Liverpool) Regiment was formed in
Oct 1914 at Seaforth, Liverpool as part of the third of Kitchener's new
armies. It was sent to the Salisbury Plain and assigned as Army Troops
with the 25th Division. In Nov 1914 it moved into billets in
Bournemouth. In Feb 1915 the battalion was reassigned to 76th Brigade in
25th Division. In May 1915 it moved to Aldershot for final training. The
battalion embarked for France and Flanders, landing at Le Havre on 25 Sep
1915. On 15 Oct 1915, the 76th Brigade was transferred to the 3rd
Division. On 23 Oct 1915, the battalion was moved to 8th Brigade within
the 3rd Division. On 4 Apr 1916 it was again transferred, to the 9th
Brigade in 3rd Division. The 13th Battalion ended the war in the same
formation in France and Flanders on 11 Nov 1918 at Le Grand Sart, east of
Le Quesnoy, France.
