Subject: [WW1] NZ Gallipoli Landing

To add to the discussion, the following is an extract from "The Auckland
Regiment" by 2nd Lieut. Ormond E. Burton, written in the 1920's. Burton,
himself, joined the regiment with the Fourth Reinforcements, so wasn't at
the actual landing.
And as a rather poignant footnote, Michael King, referring in his book "New
Zealanders at War" to the departure by sea of the NZ soldiers for the Second
World War writes:-
<<Ormond Burton, the decorated Auckland Battalion veteran of Gallipoli
watched them from Mt. Crawford Prison where he had been detained for war
resistance.>>

"April 24th(?)
'Lutzow' moves to outer harbour (of Mudros). In the evening the 'Queen
Elizabeth steamed majestically out and away, and then at last the
transports, line after line. A happy evening aboard the 'Lutzow', despite
the inevitable cheese, biscuits and tea, no gloomy forebodings, high
spirits.

April 25th
Battle of the Landing
1 a.m. the 'Lutzow' slipped quietly through the boom, all lights screened,
and out to sea. By a quarter to four, just before dawn, the ship was running
dead slow, just making headway. Suddenly a faint crack of rifle fire, the
blanketed report of a great gun, and the Battle of the Landing had begun.
Dawn came quickly, and with the full light of day the sounds of conflict
swelled into a great rattle and roar. In towards Anzac Cove the transports
were rapidly disembarking their men, warships firing broadside after
broadside, tugs and launches towing the barges towards shore. Straight ahead
was the rugged mass of Sari Bair, Hill 971, brown and green in the morning
mist, and gleaming yellow as the rising sun shone on the bare cliffs which
stood out in vivid contrast to the blue sea lapping on the pebble beach
below. A hurried breakfast, and at 8.30 the tows pulled alongside for the
Aucklanders, who were to be the first New Zealanders to land."
