In "Birdsong" the main character says to a dying colleague something along
the lines of, "Don't die yet, hang on so you can ride into liberated (maybe
it was captured) towns on the back of a tank". This is an image I
associate with WW2 and not the Great War. When did infantry start riding
on tanks?
