The movements of the 1st Devonshire Regiment, from the beginning of October
1914 were as follows - dates in brackets:
To Nampteuil (2nd), Longport (3rd), Fresnoy-la-Riviere (4th), Verberie (6th)
Entrained at Longueuil-Ste. Marie for Abbeville (7th). Arrived 7 pm and to
billets in Vauchelles-les- Quesnoy. To Vaux (8th), Dieval (10th). Marched
via Camblain-Chatelain, Choques and Hinges to Locon (11th). Moved to Gorre
in Divisional Reserve (12th). "A" and "B" Companies to Le Touret and
attached to 15th Brigade. "C" and "D" Companies attached to 15th Brigade
(15th), moved forward to Pont Fixe and relieved 1st Dorsetshire. 'A' and "B"
Companies rejoined. Moved forward to trenches on eastern side of wood to the
south-east of Givenchy (16th). Took part in attack (17th) - "B" and "D"
Companies advancing 5.30 am, but, War Diary records. were forced to fall
back on account of lack of support. Casualties -3 killed, 16 wounded.
Supported French attack (18th). Digging in after dark at Canteleux.
Casualties - 2 killed, 7 wounded. Captain H.A. Chichester killed Lieutenant-
Colonel Gloster and 1 other officer wounded, 3 other ranks killed, 10
wounded during enemy attack (20th). Trenches heavily shelled (21st) - 3
killed, 8 wounded. Enemy broke through at Violaines (22nd) and withdrawal
ordered to Givenchy. Casualties - 6 killed, 11 wounded. Heavilv shelled
throughout day (23rd) - 4 killed, 19 wounded, 4 missing. War Diary notes the
gallantry of Lieutenant R.E. Hancock who leaving the trenches carried a
wounded man 100 yards to safety."
