Hi Listers,

1st silly question coming up -

How do I go about finding out which regiments my 2 Grandfathers were in?

Neither of them appear in the CD of the National Role of the Great War -
Salford (where they were both living at the time).

Both grandfathers - James DARLEY and Charles CLARKE, lived in Salford, Lancs
& would have joined up from there. James DARLEY in Seedley and Charles
CLARKE in Pendleton (Regent Road/Trafford Road area).

I know Charles CLARKE was in a mounted regiment, as he used to tell me how
short of food they were, and on the day they had to eat his horse, he went
without! I also have his spurs.

James DARLEY was in a foot regiment and was in Belgium somewhere. I have a
photo of him with the rest of his battalion, marching across a very ornate
bridge (similar in looks to Tower Bridge, with crenellated towers at each
end). Unfortunately there is no indication of which regiment it is and the
photo was taken from too far away for the badges to be identifiable.

Both survived the War and were awarded the usual two medals, so I assume
nothing of note would have been recorded about them.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you
