It is a very interesting case. Zakopane is "the capital of Tatra
mountains". This region, inhabited by Highlanders (Górale), who immigrated
from southern Carpathians in the late Middle Ages. The Highlanders now
speak Polish (or rather their - very interesting - dialect) but they
preserved their original clannish system. The Highlander clans, like
Gąsienica or Bachleda are of genealogical nature but are divided into tens
or hundreds of separated families, using their own nicknames, like
Gąsienica-Makowski, Gąsienica-Szymków, Bachleda-Curuś,
Bachleda-Księdzulorz etc. etc.
As the Tatra mountains was a royal property, the Highlanders were free and
their clans resemble somehow noble clans (rody herbowe).
Zakopane, since the end of XIXth century is a popular resort and -
especially in the beginning of XXth century - many noble people lived
there, like the Zamoyskis.
