"I still think most peacock plumes would have been imported from Asia. The
peacock, I expect, did continue to be kept by kings, emperors, popes, and so
on, residing in Italy, Spain, the South of England, and the French Riviera,
but I don't think peacocks would thrive in more northerly European environs."

The resilient peacock has my respect. In central Alaska (US) where I lived for many, many years, there were those who, believe it or not, raised the peacock. No special arrangements were made for it's comfort other than to ensure that it's "area" was completely enclosed with netting as protection against predators.

The bird could not possibly have lived on it's own in the wild, however, when protected and fed by man, the creature thrived. Winter temperatures at times exceeded minus 70 degrees fahrenheight (I shudder to remember this).

One merely had to keep the feed bowl's full and insure that the electric element in the water bucket kept at least a small hole open so the animal could drink. A "peacock house" was always provided, which was heavy with straw, for the night's slumber which was immediately, and I suppose gratefully, accepted.
