I certainly would not wish take another poll to decide merely by looking
at people whether or not they are of Asian descent. The simple fact is
that there are lots of surviving photos of long-ago Christianized Tatar
families with fair hair, blue eyes etc. In fact, there are a few on
this very list. Only an accurate genealogy or perhaps DNA test could
determine precisely what admixture any individual has. A similar
phenomenon occurred in Turkey where a relatively small Turkic gene pool
became overwhelmed by an indigenous European pool, so that there are
precious few Turks today with original Seljuk features. Two weeks ago
on the Scola Channel I had the opportunity to see and hear the spiritual
head of the Bialystok Muslim community deliver a speech at an ecumenical
conference there. He looked thoroughly Asian, as expected, (although his
Polish is impeccable!).
