Dear Cathie -
As a former employee of a non-profit, tax-exempt organization, we were not
allowed to "charge" but we were by law allowed to ask for donations and we
had a "suggested donation" which we provided as a guideline. I believe this
is the reason for the statement as you put forth. Our genealogy societies
survive because of their volunteers and our donations.
On a personal note, it has been my experience that what we have received
from local genealogy societies has been well worth every cent of our
donations. I have personal experience with the Greene County Genealogy
Society; I can not speak highly enough for their research.
Hope this helps a little.
Ida
