Have you tried the County GEnealogical Societies in the counties where your
ancestor lived? They are chock full of information about their inhabitants.
Also have volunteers who are quite experienced and willing to do searches
for you within reason. (Small donations - $20 - are welcome tohelp them
keep these volunteer doors open). They have records on: County Census,
Vital Stats, marriage rolls, school attendees, service club memberships,
church memberships, military draftees/rooster rolls, funeral home and
cemetary internee lists. Depends on the time era, because sometimes they
"know" the family you are talking about. Anyway, its always worth a try.
Most often they can be reached via website -- general search engines for the
county and/or genealogical info can work, or you can try going to
www.iowa-counties.com and keep clicking in the direction of your desired
County and then find a contact name. Or do snails mail or by phone. Will
be worth your time. Some counties have more sophisticated Societies than
others, but they are all usually very helpful. Try it, you'll like it.
