Subject: [IOWA] First/Middle names
Date: Sat, 4 May 2002 04:30:08 EDT
This subject is one reason I am dying to see the 1930 census. In 1920 my
mother was a child of 12 and she is listed as Sarah. She hated her name and
always used her middle name Ellen. I want to see if when she answered the
questions herself if she used Sarah or Ellen. Besides I'll be there too as an
infant. Aside from not liking your name, I agree that sometimes too many
people in the family had the same first name and that was the only way to
keep them straight. Or maybe momma named daughter after mother in law to
please hubby but wasn't really all that crazy about the name herself so gave
a middle name she liked better. My husband always said he liked my middle
name better than my first name although he never called me by it. Probably
just as well, I probably wouldn't have answered to it since I wasn't used to
it. So he just called me Sandy
